Both hairless and powderpuff Cresteds require a fair
amount of regular grooming. The hairless should be bathed every one to two weeks to keep the skin clean and pores open. Use
any mild type of soap. A buff puff or slightly abrasive facial scrub can also be helpful for this. A properly bred dog with
normal skin does not require special skin treatments, medicated baths, oils, lotions, sunscreens or acne treatments.
Dogs with body hair should be shaved regularly.This will go a long way to keep
the skin clean.
The Crest and furnishings should be brushed daily with a good quality pin brush.
Both varieties should have their faces shaved every week or two. Use a small finisher,
trimmer with a 40 or 50 blade.
Powderpuffs should be brushed and combed daily to prevent matting. They should
be bathed every one to two weeks.

Puppies
should be introduced to basic grooming routines at an early age. they should be accustomed to having their faces shaved,
nails trimmed, teeth and ears inspected and cleaned on a weekly basis.
Powderpuffs
shed minimally but must be brushed frequently to prevent mats and tangles. Many owners opt to keep them in a shorter pet trim
to lessen the amount of grooming.
Powderpuffs should be carefully combed free of mats and tangles before bathing.
Both varieties can be quickly dried with a blow dryer to prevent chilling. The entire process takes just a few minutes.

The link between the hairless trait and missing teeth
has been documented for 500 years. The expression of this trait can vary from complete dentition to several missing incisors
and canine teeth. Missing premolars is a fairly uniform aspect of the condition. Either way, this poses no helath problem.
As carnivores, dogs are accustomed to eating large pieces of incompletely chewed food.
Powderpuffs do not carry the hairless gene and therefore have normal, complete
dentition.
Both varieties should be trained to tolerate regular tooth brushing and scaling.
Otherwise, professional dental cleaning under anesthesia will be the only option, expensive and potentially dangerous.

Cresteds do well on any high quality commercial diet.
They are surprisingly fond of fruits and vegetables and famous for their healthy appetites. Puppies should be fed 3 times
per day until 12 weeks of age. At six months this should be reduced to one meal per day. Free feeding is NOT recommended for
this breed. Cresteds tend to be greedy and can become quite overweight if portions are not controlled.

Hairless Cresteds do not require any special protection
from teh sun. The hairless trait evolved as an advantage in tropical environments, thus giving the breed a high tolerance
for heat and sun.
However, the natural color range for hairless dogs is black to blue to bronze.
Selective breeding has resulted in dogs of all colors, some of which are better suited to sunbathing. Dark, solid colored
dogs quickly develop a tan when exposed to the sun due to the high concentraion of melanin in their skin. Pink, spotted and
broken colored dogs will require more time to build up a tolerance so tehir sunbathing routine should be more gradual. Once
they have acheived their full color, Cresteds are known to be devoted sun worshippers. On the other hand, they have no appreciation
of cold weather. As a rule, if it is cold enough for you to wear a coat, please do the same for your Crested.
Like most Toy breeds, Cresteds are known for their longevity. Average lifespan
for a Chinese Crested is 13-15 and dogs, and many live to 18 or 19. With proper care and attention, a Crested will bring many
years of joy to your life.
